The African Union Mission to the U.S.A. hosted the Inaugural African Union Ambassadors’ Ball as it commemorated the 20th anniversary of the African Union (AU), an organization that has been the core of addressing key issues and engendering multilateral relationships between the nations on the African continent, working towards unity and progress on the continent, and continuing to strengthen international relations between the U.S. and Africa. On Friday, December 9, 2022, at the historic Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Themed “Our Africa, Our Future”, the ball focused on U.S.-Africa partnerships while also celebrating the diversity of African culture.

James E. Clyburn is the Majority Whip, the third-ranking Democrat in the United States House of Representatives, and currently serves as the Chairman of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. He is also the Chairman of the Rural Broadband Task Force and Democratic Faith Working Group. When he came to Congress in 1993 to represent South Carolina’s sixth congressional district, Congressman Clyburn was elected co-president of his freshman class and quickly rose through leadership ranks.

The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, is one of America’s foremost civil rights, religious and political figures. Over the past forty years, he has played a pivotal role in virtually every movement for empowerment, peace, civil rights, gender equality, and economic and social justice. On August 9, 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded Reverend Jackson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Reverend Jackson has been called the “Conscience of the Nation” and “the Great Unifier,” challenging America to be inclusive and to establish just and humane priorities for the benefit of all. He is known for bringing people together on common ground across lines of race, culture, class, gender and belief.

Mae Jemison

Dr. Mae Jemison has become a woman of many talents. At a young age her curiosity led her to acquire many things by learning science, dance, and acting in school plays. In college, Dr. Jemison studied physical and social sciences, and learned to speak Russian and Swahili. The inquisitive Mae Jemison earned her degree in chemical engineering and African studies. She later studied medicine for four years and became a medical doctor. Her plight to learning was without limits.

Dikembe Mutombo

NBA Hall of Famer DIKEMBE MUTOMBO played professional basketball in the NBA for 18 years before retiring from the Houston Rockets in 2009. In 2009, then NBA Commissioner David Stern appointed Mutombo to the newly created position of NBA Global Ambassador where he continues to work to grow and celebrate the game of basketball through international sporting events while working with NBA Cares to bring attention to important social issues. He also works with the newly formed Basketball Africa League (BAL) which is Africa’s premier men’s basketball league. Giving back has always been a trademark of Mutombo ever since he entered the NBA in 1991. As a former spokesman for CARE, the international relief agency, Mutombo visited the Somali refugee camps in Northern Kenya in 1993 and traveled with NBA Commissioner David Stern and Georgetown colleagues Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning to Cape Town and Johannesburg.
